I'm also studying A level history and for my personal assignment have decided upon the question;
How valid is the view that the Gunpowder plot of 1605 was a justified act (of terror) against a repressive regime?
I have many sources but am finding it hard to sort through the information for relevant stuff! Can anyone give me any information at all, or any useful sources about the treatment of catholics etc?
Thankyou very much for your time ![](../forums/icon_smile.gif) ![](../forums/icon_smile_big.gif) ![](../forums/icon_smile_cool.gif) ![](../forums/icon_smile_shy.gif) ![](../forums/icon_smile_clown.gif) ![](../forums/icon_smile_approve.gif) ![](../forums/icon_smile_kisses.gif) |

(Welcome aboard, NBarr!)
The question you've chosen is a very good one. Undoubtedly the Catholics were treated hideously during the second half of Elizabeth I's reign. It was quite common for practising Catholics to have their homes searched at any time of the day or night, and to be fined heavily for not attending Protestant church services. Essentially, the Elizabethan regime really was trying to clobber 'Recusants' financially and socially into conforming.
When James succeeded to the throne, he sort of led the Catholics to believe that he would offer a formal toleration of the Olde Religion, then, after spending a few months 'testing the water' with relaxed laws, he changed his mind and re-imposed the Recusancy fines.
Looking at it impartially, I think some kind of rebellious act would have been quite justified, but the sheer enormous scale of the Gunpowder Treason - the great number of people it would have killed, and the political chaos it would have inflicted on a fledgling Great Britain - was simply far too much.
But that's just my opinion. ![](../forums/icon_smile_big.gif) |

[purple][size=3][font=Comic Sans MS][font=Georgia][b]thankyou that proves very helpful,
during my research i cant quite believe some of the methods used to control catholic uprisings etc by elizabeth however can find alot about james's treatment of them, was he similar or did he have any new methods?
Im also finding it tricky trying to argue that the plot was completly unjustfifed, i mean i can understand it due to the way they were treated and probably cause thats what im currently readying!
Anyone have any ideas on why this act of terrorism cant be justified?
