Hello everybody, I'm new here. Just wondering whether anybody could give me a general idea on the extent to which sectarian bias has affected the "pro-plot vs. no-plot" debate, and some good examples of sources and historians which reflect this?

Thanks muchly!

If at first you don't succeed, you are obviously not Chuck Norris.

Unfortunately most of the research that has been done with regard to the plot, and the books that have come about as a result are all coloured in some way by what you term sectarian bias. Whether this comes from those associated with the Society of Jesus who seek to justify what the plotters did, given the circumstances under which they lived, or from staunch Protestants who simply claim that such a plot was destined to fail and they got what they deserved, it is extremely difficult to read something of neutrality.

This web site was set up in part to correct this obvious sectarian bias, by providing neutral opinion and primary source material from which readers can form their own opinions.

As for the content of your question, the pro-plot vs no-plot idea has been around almost from day one. The question of whether the government (via Cecil) was behind the whole thing, or whether it was indeed a catholic conspiracy has been speculated and in turn quashed by many authors. While no single work follows exclusively the idea that Cecil was behind it, many continue to throw it in there to tantalise, yet the reality is that it has been fully debunked.

As a suggestion I would read the following works and weigh them against each other. By doing so you will quickly see who and what has the greater credibility.

Durst, Paul - Intended Treason - What really happened in the Gunpowder Plot,W.H.Allen, London 1970
Edwards, Francis - The Gunpowder Plot. The Narrative of Oswald Tesimond alias Greenaway, The Folio Society, London 1973
Edwards, Francis - Guy Fawkes: the real story of the Gunpowder Plot?, Harte-Davis, London 1969
Gerard, John - What Was the Gunpowder Plot? The traditional story tested by original evidence., Osgood, McIlvaie & Co., London 1897
Gerard, John - The Gunpowder Plot and the Gunpowder Plotters, in reply to Professor Gardiner, Harper & Bros., London 1897
Nicholls, Mark - Investigating Gunpowder Plot, Manchester University Press, Manchester 1991
Spink, Henry Hawkes - The Gunpowder Plot and Lord Mounteagle's Letter, Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co, London 1902
