A couple of years ago I visited the Tower, specifically to seek out engravings made by two of the gunpowder conspirators during their stay there. Upon my arrival I was dissapointed to find the Broad Arrow tower (Everard Digbie) closed, and the Martin Tower housing a display about the Cullinan Diamond - interesting as it was I was sad to see the engraving by Ambrose Rookwoode covered over.

I should be most interested if the GPS were to compile a "places of interest" feature with up-to-date news on accessibility to items of interest.

For example, the National archive is currently displaying the confession of Master Fawkes featuring with the barely discernable "torture signature".

Can anyone shed light on any other interesting places to visit?

Gareth,
Visited Ordsall Hall in Salford, Greater Manchester, last week.
Legend has it that Guy himself once stayed there.
Probably not true as per my entry "Ordsall Hall".
The Hall itself is now surrounded to a large extent by a housing estate but it has it`s own car park and was free entry when I went.
It is a fine old building with it`s obligatory ghosts.
The staff there appear very enthusiastic and are very helpfull.
I should check out their website (and ghost cam) before making any decisions to visit etc.
I live in Wigan and so it is not that far from my home and I was dropping my son off at the railway station anyway so it was a good day all round for me.
I am visiting London at the beginning of December myself and am hoping to visit The Tower myself.
I remember seeing a thing on the television some time ago that showed Guy FAWKES` cell that was called the "place of little ease" because the prisoner could only stand up in it.
I have never seen or heard of this since.
Is there such a place ?
If you check the various Halls etc associated with the Conspirators etc. they appear to be mainly private dwellings or homes etc.
Do you know if there are any contacts for arranging visits etc as groups or small parties etc ?
My house also has a small cellar but I don`t go in it as i don`t like spiders, and my wife has forbidden me given tours of it.
I don`t think I would have made a very good Conspirator or companion for FAWKES.
George.

Hello George

"Little Ease" is believed to have become a doorway, I think it's one of the ones at the basement level of the White Tower as you approach the exit having walked all the way round.

Ask a Yeoman Warder, some are better than others but they do have refernce notes for visitors asking uncommon questions.

Hope u enjoy your visit.

Gareth

"I should be most interested if the GPS were to compile a "places of interest" feature with up-to-date news on accessibility to items of interest."

This is an excellent idea and will be added to the list. Perhaps we can also add a "features" section on each as well giving the prospective visitor an idea of what to see there or what to look out for.

I think that updating each of the location pages with up to date info would work best, as well as perhaps a list on this message board of places to go and times of accessibility.

Gareth,
I went to the Tower on 3/12/05.
I will be going again soon and will ask the Warders.
As regards places of interest,I would personally find this very useful together with any organised visits to places normally not open to the general public etc.
PS the cctv monitor in the Beacham Tower that shows a male in period costume walking on the floor above is a bit tacky. Unless it is a real ghost and I am missing the point.
George.
