We love to encourage young students in the love of history and have them learn that history is not just a bunch of dry dates and battles to memorize. Below are some of the essays that have been written by students on the Gunpowder Plot, and we would like to show off their efforts and tell them well done!

We will leave it to their teachers to grade them for accuracy!

The story of Guy Fawkes

Frank Scholl

In 1605 Guido Fawkes wanted to blow up the King because Catholic people weren't allowed to build their own Catholic churches. But Guido wasn't alone. 12 other men helped him. But he was very important because he was an expert in explosives. Guido Fawkes and his men wanted to put more than 30 barrels of gunpowder into a cellar under the the Houses of Parliament.

On 27 October 1605 Guido visited his wife Anne because he wanted to see her before they did the "Gunpowder Plot". Anne said to him that he would start a holy war if he blew up the King. But Guido took a cross and prayed with Anne. She wasn't allowed to come with him because she wouldn't be safe.

When Guido was back in London he checked every barrel. When he was in the cellar with the gunpowder the King's Officers caught him. King James I had come back to London the following day and then his Officers checked every cellar and room of the Houses of Parliament. The King`s Officers said that Guido should tell them the names of the other Catholic traitors. But he kept his mouth close. One of the Officers said:"Hope that your God has more mercy than your king because your king hasn't any mercy for you. The punishment for a traitor is the death. They told him that he was going to suffer because they were going to hang him the following day in the garden of St. Paul's Cathedral. And that happened.
