I have a question for the GPS community.
I am in the process of finishing a book on the women who served at the Marian and Elizabethan courts (rewrite of a Ph.D.). One of Elizabeth I's long-serving Chamberers was a woman who married Thomas Habington's father, John Habington the Cofferer, in 1568 as his second wife. Her Christian name was Dorothy, her surname was usually given as Bradbelt in official records, but also variously as Brodbill, Bradlett, Brodebeck, and Brodebent. She probably died in or shortly after 1577, so missing her stepsons' involvement in the Babington Plot.
My question is, does anyone have any suggestions as to Dorothy's family? A woman who was almost certainly her mother, Jane Bradbelt, had been a Chamberer to Elizabeth back in the 1530s and 1540s. It is possible she was not English. Otherwise, there is little to go on.
My hope is that one of you might have noticed something in passing. All suggestions gratefully received! |
